This year Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival offers two main selections focusing only on experimental cinema. Fascinations is part of the competition program: “it is a large factory for experimental filmmaking that takes films based on reality and strips them of all that weighs them down, thus significantly expanding the possibilities of filmic expression.” Exprmntl.cz, which belong to the non-competition sections, “is a survey of the latest Czech experimental films that touch upon reality and never cease in their search for new ways of expressing reality through classical and digital film.”

“The Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival is a celebration of creative documentary film and the greatest event of its kind in Central and Eastern Europe. They conceive documentary films primarily as unique artworks dealing with significant themes.

The festival represents an artifact inspiring a playful reflection of the world from various perspectives. The organizers do not follow common festival models, nor do they have a routine, pragmatic approach to program selection. Jihlava pays tribute to courage and risk.”

Siegfried Alexander Fruhauf: Still Dissolution (2013) – Austria

Photographs of the seaside area torn from the monotony of peacefulness as they start to melt and the watery surface in the picture seems to swell and roil. Four parallel shots undergo their own independent material transformation and the realistic image is engulfed in splotches and bubbles, while the flicker effect underscores the disturbance of the photograph´s unchanging permanence as it develops its dramatic dissolution.

vladislav_knezevic_A.D.A.M

Vladislav Knežević: A.D.A.M. (2014) – Croatia

The expansiveness of empty landscapes that call attention to their subtle forms in a dynamic macro-perspective, and densely built urban ensembles combined with fragments of dry instructions and inconspicuously urgent communications to create a reserved fictional meditation on the relationship between man and machine.

michal_cab_an_event

Michal Cáb: An Event I. (2009) – Czech Republic

On one hand, Event I is an audio-visual tool programmed using the Pure Data language, and on the other hand, it’s a live performance during which an attempt will be made to recast noise into a structured form. More than a game, it’s a competition with an instrument that constantly challenges the artist with new impulses and challenges to “tame” it. The instrument is the ma/essage.

This atmospheric VHS experiment with a dose of the mysterious and inspiration from film noir takes place in the fictional city of New Yeshiva, where – set against shots of the urban landscape and with a voiceover narration – we witness the stories of dead children, rabbis, and a community in strange hoods. What is hidden inside the blue box?

ruzickova_prochazka_calabek_autonomous

Alice Růžičková, Jiří Procházka: Calábek Autonomous (2014) – Czech Republic

This original look at the plant kingdom made using a montage of Jan Calábek’s scientific film experiments combines a naïve style with expert terminology in a slightly surrealist homage to the work of this enthusiastic popularizer of science. Timelapse macro shots are accompanied by a description of the exact measurement of plant processes.

zbynek_baladran_dead_reckoning

Zbyněk Baladrán: Dead Reckoning (2014) – Czech Republic

The vicious circle of modern man. Statistics, psychoanalysis, income, and paranoia as the basic attributes of contemporary society. Four seemingly incongruous video sequences that share an intense experience of emptiness and sterility are accompanied by random contrapuntal commentary. An exceptionally unsettling work of video art on the fruitless search for the meaning of life in consumer society.

Martin Ježek, Lukáš Jiřička: How Weather Is Made (2014) – Czech Republic

“In 1990-92, I found myself suffering from schizoactive psychosis, as the doctors called my state of mind. I was filled with delusions and fantasies. Through my actions and behavior, I ‘created’ clouds, storms, tornados, downpours, blizzards, cyclones, anti-cyclones both where I lived and throughout the world.” (Zdeněk Košek) Storms for projection and quadrophonic sound. Live performance.

anna_kryvenko_silently_like_a_comet

Anna Kryvenko: Silently Like A Comet (2014) – Czech Republic

The revolution on Kiev’s Maidan as a close-up of the city without any broader perspective. Recycled amateur footage from the internet offers an ironic commentary on the spectacular narratives by which the media described events in Ukraine at the turn of the year. Randomly selected and shown out of context, the various sequences break down the events into individual, slow-motion fragments before reassembling them in an emotional collage of incomprehensible unrest and random moments on the street.

Creatively paraphrasing the work of Wilhelm Reich, the filmmakers have created a 3D animation of various objects, colored by theoretical considerations on the fetishization of goods and possibilities for liberating ourselves from the desire to amass property.

petr_zabrodsky_asphx

Petr Zábrodský: [A]SPHX (2014) – Czech Republic

The audiovisual experiment [A]SPHX was made through the conscious deformation of the digital process.
