Experimental film programs at Jihlava IDFF 2016

This year Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival offers four extremely rich programs focusing only on experimental cinema. Fascinations is part of the competition program: “it is a large factory for experimental filmmaking that takes films based on reality and strips them of all that weighs them down, thus significantly expanding the possibilities of filmic expression.” This year two Eastern European experimental films made it to the international competition program: Ivan Faktor’s I would leave everything here (2016) and Péter Lichter’s short recalling Marc Augé’s famous anthropological concept of non-places.

Exprmntl.cz, which belong to the non-competition sections, “is a survey of the latest Czech experimental films that touch upon reality and never cease in their search for new ways of expressing reality through classical and digital film.” Fascinations: Aerial View introduces “a selection of experimental films cultivates the means of expression offered by the camera’s detached view.” This year the curators of Jihlava IDFF prepared a special screening program focusing on the Russian Avant-garde. “The pioneer of the moving image – Dziga Vertov – and other significant figures of the Russian interwar avant-garde explore not only Soviet society, but, even more importantly, art and the nature of the medium of media.” (for more info about the screenings: check the calendar)

This year’s festival also presents the second edition of Conference Fascinations –  a meeting of experimental documentary film distributors, gallerists and festival representatives. Following up on Conference Fascinations 2015 that brought together representatives of experimental film distribution companies from all over the world, giving them the opportunity to meet, confer and learn more about the Czech experimental scene, focusing primarily on the curatorship and institutional-commercial aspect of presenting and disseminating this type of works, this year’s discussion will revolve around experimental film curatorship in relation to specialized festivals and the presentation of moving images in gallery spaces.
